Rain Garden Restoration and Vegetable Gardens
Living Reef Action Campaign SoMd

Bringing habitat restoration to schools in St. Mary's and Calvert Counties.
Picture
A weed-choked rain garden was replanted with native trees, shrubs and flowers. The restored garden soaks up more stormwater, uses excess nitrogen and is a home for butterflies.
Picture
Students from Grades 5 through 12 work with adult volunteers to build concrete reef balls that will be set with oyster spat and planted in permitted sites to restore habitat for up to 30 species of marine plants and animals.
Picture
Master Gardener volunteers work with students to understand and care for the school vegetable gardens.

After 3 years, reef balls planted at Tilghman Island were raised for monitoring by Chesapeake Bay Foundation scientists.
Rain Barrels and Interpretive Signage
Picture
Cub Scout Pack 1786 installed new rain barrels on the downspouts of a portable classroom to slow run-off, reduce stream sedimentation and conserve our aquifers.

Picture
Each of the thousand oysters growing on a single reef ball can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day.

Picture
Community volunteers installed interpretive signage that explains the environmental services provided by rain gardens and rain barrels.
